ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM
Abstract expressionism is the art movement pioneered by painters such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning in the 1940s and 1950s.
Characteristics of Abstract Expressionism are gestural brush-strokes giving the impression of spontaneity. In this way the artist believed they directly placed their inner impulses onto the canvas. Jackson Pollock famously placed his canvas on the ground and danced around it pouring paint from the can.
The name itself evokes their aim to make art that was both abstract and expressive. Proponents of the style were inspired by the surrealist idea that art should come from the unconscious mind.
