WHAT IS A BURL?
A burl is an outgrowth on a tree formed from unsprouted bud tissue. Their formation is typically a result of some form of stress such as an injury or a viral or fungal infection.
The burl forms large, knobby looking growths on the trunk or branch of the tree. The stress caused by the injury, fungus, virus, or insects creates an intense grain pattern.
In addition, rapid growth in burls causes further stress and pressure on the wood.
Due to a burl’s peculiar and high figuring, it is prized for its beauty and rarity. It is sought after by furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors.
